FAQ

It is easy to compare business energy rates but the market is consistently changing and not having the right information to hand can make your search for business energy contracts more expensive and sometimes quite daunting.

Great things to know or have to hand are:

  • A recent business energy bill.
  • Your current business electricity supplier
  • Your meter type (standard business meter, Smart or half-hourly meter)
  • Your electricity usage for at least 1-year
  • Business Information

Things to be aware of when it comes to finding competitive business electricity rates:

  • Sticking/Retaining with the same supplier -some of our customers decide to stay with their current business energy supplier. This usually happens when they compare business energy prices against their renewal and discover the current supplier is offering cheaper deals to new customers. We can negotiate with your existing supplier so you can switch business energy tariffs and not suppliers.
  • Taking the renewal price of contract -Sometimes it can seem easier and tempting to agree to your renewal letter from your current energy suppliers. Renewal offers are often more expensive than new prices available on the market. Comparing business energy prices against your renewal is easy and only takes a few minutes.

Fixed contracts guarantee a stable electricity and gas tariff at a locked in rate for a specific term that range from one to five years.

A fixed price energy contract may be ideal for those seeking absolute price certainty, protecting your business from market volatility and rising rates. With a fixed rate tariff, you agree to pay a fixed unit price and a standing charge. A fixed energy tariff is great for businesses who want to maintain control of their bills and budgeting, as they will be protected from energy price increases.

Deemed out of contract tariffs are a type of energy deal suppliers use for businesses that have reached the end of an energy contract without switching suppliers or signing up to a new one with their current supplier.

Rates on out of contract deemed contracts are usually among the highest charged by suppliers, and prices are considered to be one of the most expensive in the energy market. Avoid overpaying for energy by switching to a new deal before your current contract expires.

The big six business energy suppliers are the largest and most well-established suppliers in the market and include British Gas, Scottish Power, Eon, EDF, Npower and SSE.

Although the big six suppliers still have the biggest market share there are various suppliers growing their customer base that are closing the gap. Big supplier names are often seen as a safer option when it comes to switching business energy suppliers. But, despite their lofty reputations, big isn’t always best when it comes to your energy supply.

The Energy Bills Discount Scheme is the government’s latest business energy support scheme. Designed to help those struggling with rising energy prices and high energy bills. This new scheme will replace the Energy Bill Relief Scheme from April 1 2023 but this is not an energy price cap. It will offer discounted unit rates on fixed-price contracts signed on or after December 1 2021, as well as deemed and out-of-contract rates, subject to a minimum threshold. It is worth knowing deemed and out-of-contract rates are usually higher than contracted rates, so it’s worth comparing deals to see if you can save money with a fixed-price contract.

The current scheme, EBDS will offer a discount on the wholesale portion of your unit rates as long as they’re higher than a minimum threshold. Those with a high energy consumption will get a bigger relative discount than other businesses and the threshold price is lower.

Here’s how it works for most Energy users:

  • Electricity – £0.01961 (about 2.0p per kWh) off the difference between the wholesale cost of the unit rate you pay to your energy supplier and the price threshold of 30.20p per kWh.
  • Gas – A maximum of £0.00697 (about 0.7p per kWh) off the difference between the wholesale cost of the unit rate you pay to your energy supplier and the price threshold of 10.70p per kWh.
  • The lowest rate you can be discounted to is 10.70p per kWh of gas and 30.20p per kWh of electricity. If your business is already paying this amount or less you will not be eligible for the discount.
